Once you arrived at the Heraklion airport you will need to go to your
hotels.
Depending on the time of the day there is a more or less frequent bus
service
that passes from the center of town (and serves the hotels that are
close to the center) and continues towards Amoudara were the hotel
Santa Marina and the appartements are.
Those that stay at Santa Marina Hotel have to ask the driver or a passager
where to stop.
However, since public transport here leaves much to be desired,
the best means to go to your hotel and also to go around is the taxi.
It is relatively inexpensive. For tarifs
look at the travel section travel section.
You can call a taxi at 210 102 or 210 146 or 210 124.
Taxi drivers have the tendancy to overcharge and are rarely honest so
beware.
To get from the center of town to the physics department (Voutes
region) you can take
a taxi (around 1500 drx) or a bus (around 280 drx).
Buses usually go to the University Hospital (known locally as
Pepagni')
and from there you have to walk 300 m to the department.
There are less frequent buses from the center
that go to the FORTH Research institute
(known locally as ITE) which pass in front of the Physics Department.
If you are coming from Amoudara the only reasonable option is to take
the taxi (it costs around 1000 drx).
If you have rented a car here are the directions to the Physics
Department:
From the center of town you have to get on 62 Martiron Street (easy,
ask at the hotel or look at a map) and then turn left onto
the road that leads to Moires. This comes 100 m after you go over a
small bridge, the only one you will meet on your way out of the city
(unless you are REALLY lost). There there are traffic lights and you
must turn left (if you are coming from town).
If you are coming from Amoudara you are going towards Heraklion from
the main road.
This is the same road as the one (62 Martiron Street) that comes out
of Heraklion in the opposite direction.
When you will meet the trafic lights you turn RIGHT towards Moires.
In both cases you now follow the road, you pass under the National
road and in about a kilometer there are traffic lights.
You turn to the right following the signals to the Hospital and
Technology Institute FORTH.
You continue on that road as it winds for about 2 Kms until you see on
your right a Kiosque and
immediately afterwards you turn right (there is a sign indicating FORTH).
You continue for about a kilometer and then you see two white buildings, one to the left, the other
to the right.
The one to the right is the Physics and Biology building. You proceed to the main
entrance and enter. There is a guardian inside 24/24 hours. He will guide you inside the building.
Here you can find local maps of the city of Heraklion.
Unfortunately for the moment only in Greek.
