This page contains information useful for the paritcipants of the workshop. It is constantly updated, so please check it from time to time (don't forget to click the refresh button on your browser!). Its URL is http://hep.physics.uoc.gr/sustring2001/local-info.html.

  1. Participants

The following table contains information on the participants with their email addresses, office location and period of stay in Crete for the workshop. Each participant has a local email address of the form stringnn@physics.uoc.gr where nn is 1-30, which will be used by the organisers for annoucements etc, and you can use it for receiving email locally. You may create a .forward file in your home directory which contains one line with the email address you want your local email forwarded to.

In order to call another participant by phone from your office, simply dial the four digit number written on this table. If you need to be called, your other party has to call +30-81-39nnnn, where nnnn is the four digit number written on this table. A caller from Heraclion simply calls 39nnnn and a caller from another city in greece 081-39nnnn. To place a call abroad prepend 00 to the country code and to call another greek city prepend 0 to the city code.

If you need to receive ordinary mail the address is:

2. Cafeteria

The cafeteria is located at the 0th level of the physics building. It is open 8:00-19:00 and offers hot dishes from 12:30-17:00. You may buy a hot dish together with salad bar, fruit, desert and a soda for 1200-1500drs.

3. Library

The Library is located on the 3rd floor of the physics building next to the main elevator. It is expected to be oper Monday 9 April - Friday 13 April and Tuesday 17 April - Friday 20 April from 9:00-14:30. If you need to use the libarry outside these hours ask for a key from T. Tomaras or E. Kiritsis.

You may access the contents of the library at the URL http://www.libh.uoc.gr/.

4. Computing

Each one of the participants has been assigned a unix account on the local machines. Your username is the first part of your email address, i.e. of the form stringnn where nn is 1-30. You should obtain your password from the organisers and then logon on to the specially assigned PCs in your office. These in most of the cases will have a label which gives their IP number and hostname. The hostname is of the form stringsnn where nn is a number. You should change your password immediantely by using the

yppasswd
command. The new password could take a while until is is updated in the database.

You may logon to your account from any other machine via one of our servers like ianos. You can do so using the command:

ssh ianos -l your-user-name
The printer is located in the coffee room of the second floor and its name is lp3 (the small one). There is a color printer as well in that room which does not function for the moment and whose name is lp3c. There is a color printer which is working on the first floor whose name is lp1ac. You may obtain paper from the organisers. Examples of printing commands are:
lpr -P lp3 file.ps
gunzip -c file.ps.gz | psnup | lpr -P lp3 (prints two pages in one)
You may obtain help on computer related problems from the phone numbers (called in this sequence please): 4159, 4161, 4155-8.

5. Transportation

In order to get to the conference location from your hotels and backwards you may call a taxi at 210102 or 210146 or 210124 (in order to place a call you can get a telephone card from the cafeteria and use the public phone in the corridor outside the cafeteria. Most of the phones in your office will allow you a local call by dialing a 9 before the number you want to call). The fare should be around 1900drs (including additional 250drs for Easter present) plus 400drs for the call. On the way back the fare could be somehow higher since the taxis charge for the trip from the taxi station to the place they pick you up. When leaving the conference location you can avoid these charges by getting a taxi from the entrance of the University Hospital where they usually park waiting for Hospital visitor customers.

If you want to use the bus you can go to the bus station which is located opposite to the main entrance of the physics building. There are buses leaving from there from 6:45-11:10 which will take you downtown Heraklion. The bus frequency is one every 15-20min until 18:00hrs and one every 30min thereafter. The buses to the University Hospital from the center leave the Heraklion Airport from 6:25-21:45. In order to ride the bus you should have a bus ticket in advance. You may purchase such tickets at the cafeteria where lunch breaks take place or at a kiosk downtown Heraklion. They cost 270drs (for shorter rides they cost less).

The main entrance of the University Hospital is located around 300m straight ahead from the main entrance of the Physics Building. You enter from the back entrance located to the right of the Medical School and you continue straight ahead. We remind you that the best way to find your way in Greece is to ask around!
