Local Information

Accomodation

There are two options for accomodation. The first concerns hotels at the center of Heraklion. Their choice, prices and contact details can be found below.
If you choose this option you should book directly at the hotel of your choice, making sure to mention that you are visiting the Physics Departement in order to claim the special prices.

The second option involves small appartements in Amoudara, the suburb to the West of Heraklion. The appartments are less than 50 meters from the Amoudara beach. They involve studios (for 1 person or a couple, costing about 300 euros per month) and one bedroom appartments (they can be shared by two persons, costing about 400 per month, or 200 per month per person). They have a kitchenette and cooking ustensils as well as a free wireless network. Towels and linen will be changed once a week.

Students that will be supported by the Erasmus Intensive Programme, should choose this option as it is compatible with the rate of perdiem that will be paid.

If you want to book an appartment, you should contact our administrative assistant (Mrs K. Xoustoulaki) as soon as possible, as the availability of such appartments is not guaranteed after 1 January 2013.

The list of students and the places they stay can be found here.

Financial Support

The course is supported by the Erasmus Intensive Programme of the EU, administered in Greece by IKY. The programs covers the following costs:

For students suported by the Erasmus Intensive Programme, subsistence costs are 20 euros per day, to a total of 28*20=560 euros for the whole duration of the school. To claim this the student must stay for the entire school and attend all the lectures. This amounts covers confortably a monthly rent of 300 euros (or 200 if sharing a one bedrom appartement) and lunch and dinners at the University Cafeteria (66 euros per month, lunch+dinner, special rate). The travel to Heraklion is covered at 90% level (economy airfare).

For lecturers the subsistence rates (hotel+perdiem) are 144 euros per day for the first week, and 403 euros for the whole second week. Travel is covered at 75%. If additional compensation is needed for the rest 25% please ask for this in advance to the organizers.

Basic rules for reimbursement:

Boarding passes: Don't forget to keep your original boarding passes on all flights you take to arrive and depart from Heraklion. Both conventional and/or electronic boarding passes will be accepted. The later are advantageous because you can save them as an electronic file and send them to the organizers by e-mail. In case you only have a conventional boarding pass you must send the original by registered mail and a scanned copy by e-mai to organizer. All boarding passes for trips in both directions are needed. Remember the Erasmus rule: No boarding pass, no reimbursement - its that simple!

Ground transportation to and from the airport: The Erasmus Intensive Programme will also support peripheral costs such as getting from your home to the airport and back or from the airport to your hotel and back, etc. In all cases the cheapest means can only be accomodated - for example the cost of public transportation (and not taxi). Also receipts/tickets must always accompany any such claims. Only original receipts can be accepted (no photocopies or scans).

Travel by car: Travel to Heraklion by private or rental car (rather than by air) will be supported up to the amount of the cost of public transportation to get to Heraklion.

In case of any doubt on any of the above please contact our administrative assistant (Mrs K. Xoustoulaki)
